Where is the White Desert and how do you get there?
The journey starts with a drive from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis. There you switch to a 4×4 and continue through the Western Desert, arriving in the afternoon to watch the sunset among the rock formations. On the way you pass the highlights that make this route special:
- The Black Desert: dark volcanic hills and peaks over golden sand.
- Crystal Mountain: a ridge where quartz crystals sparkle in the rock.
- Natural springs near Bahariya and El-Haiz, a welcome stop on the road.
- Agabat Valley and sand dunes, good for photos and sandboarding.

What is a night in the White Desert like?
Camp is set up before sunset in a sheltered spot between the rocks. Dinner is cooked at camp, followed by Bedouin tea around the fire. In the morning you wake early for the sunrise, have breakfast at camp and walk among the famous formations before the drive back.
When is the best time to go?
The desert is most comfortable from about October to April, with warm days and cool nights. Winter nights can be cold, so bring a warm layer. In summer the days are very hot, so time in the open desert focuses on mornings and evenings. The exact schedule always depends on the weather and local conditions. Can I visit the White Desert as a day trip from Cairo?
It is a long way, so most travellers stay at least one night. The 2-day tour is the shortest comfortable option.
Is the Black Desert part of the same trip?
Yes. The Black Desert lies on the road between Bahariya and the White Desert, so all three tours above include it.
Do I need camping experience?
No. The camp, bedding and meals are prepared for you.
