Fayoum Oasis Guide: Wadi El Hitan, Magic Lake & Wadi El Rayan

Fayoum is the easiest desert escape from Cairo: about two hours away, it combines whale fossils in the desert, lakes, waterfalls, sand dunes and a village of potters. Here is what to see in Fayoum and how to fit it all into one day.

What to see in Fayoum

Wadi El Hitan (Valley of the Whales)

A UNESCO World Heritage site in the desert, famous for fossil skeletons of ancient whales that lived here when the area was covered by the sea. Walking between the fossils with the desert all around is the highlight of any Fayoum trip.

Mudawara Mountain

A desert mountain with wide panoramic views over the dunes and lakes of the Wadi El Rayan area.

The Magic Lake

A lake surrounded by golden dunes, known for water that seems to change colour with the light during the day. The dunes around it are a favourite spot for sandboarding.

Wadi El Rayan waterfalls

Small waterfalls between two lakes in the desert, a rare sight in Egypt and a pleasant stop after the dunes.

Tunis Village

A village on the edge of Lake Qarun known for its traditional handicrafts and pottery workshops, a calm place to end the day.

When to go and what to bring
