White Desert vs Black Desert: What’s the Difference?
The White Desert and the Black Desert are two different landscapes on the same road through Egypt’s Western Desert. You do not have to choose between them: every White Desert trip from Cairo passes through the Black Desert on the way. Here is what makes each one special, and how to see both.
The short answer
| Black Desert | White Desert | |
|---|---|---|
| What it looks like | Cone-shaped hills of golden sand topped with dark, volcanic-looking stones | Wide plains of white chalk rock carved by the wind into pillars, mushrooms and other shapes |
| Where it is | On the road south of Bahariya Oasis | Further along the same road, past Crystal Mountain and Agabat Valley |
| What you do there | Climb one of the hills for a wide view over the desert | Watch the sunset and sunrise, walk among the formations, camp for the night |
| Time you spend | A stop of an hour or so on the way | The afternoon, the night and the next morning |
The Black Desert
Soon after you leave Bahariya Oasis, the sand turns dotted with dark stones and small, cone-shaped hills rise on both sides of the road. Their tops are covered with black, volcanic-looking rock, which gives the area its name. The classic stop here is a short climb up one of the hills: from the top you see the black-capped peaks running to the horizon over golden sand.
Between the two: Crystal Mountain and Agabat
On the way from the Black Desert to the White Desert, most trips stop at Crystal Mountain, a ridge where crystals sparkle in the rock, and at Agabat Valley, with its tall rock walls and sand dunes, good for photos and sandboarding.
The White Desert
The White Desert is the highlight of the trip. Here the ground turns white: chalk rock shaped by wind and sand into pillars, mushrooms and figures that change colour with the light, from gold at sunset to silver under the moon. This is where you camp. You arrive in the afternoon, watch the sunset among the formations, spend the night at a desert camp and wake up for the sunrise.
Can you see both in one trip?
Yes. Because the Black Desert lies on the road to the White Desert, all of our White Desert safaris include both:
- White & Black Desert, 2 Days / 1 Night: the shortest trip from Cairo, with one night camping in the White Desert.
- White & Black Desert, 3 Days / 2 Nights: more time in the desert, more springs and valleys.
- Bahariya Oasis & White Desert, 3 Days / 2 Nights: the oasis and the desert together.

Which one is better for photos?
Both, at different times of day. The Black Desert looks best from a hilltop in the daytime, when you can see the contrast between the dark peaks and the sand. The White Desert is at its best in the soft light of sunset and sunrise, and on a clear night under the stars.
When to go
From about October to April the days are warm and the nights cool, the most comfortable season for both deserts. Desert nights can be cold in winter, so bring a warm layer. Here is our packing list for a desert safari.
